Tomodachi Collection is a 2009 social simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS solely in Japan. The game follows the daily interactions between interactable Miis who reside on an island overseen by the player as they build relationships and solve problems. Like most life simulators, Tomodachi Collection is open-ended and features no detailed story. The game starts off by introducing the island that the player is prompted to name, which will become the home for the Miis that they create. The player is then prompted to create a Mii that resembles themself. The player is introduced to a few of the game's core mechanics (creating Miis, solving problems, and having Miis form relationships) through a short tutorial, before letting them free to make Miis whenever they wish and continue the various aspects of gameplay. Mii creation As the Nintendo DS has no native Mii creation software, the player must add Miis either by making them in the game's own, scaled-down Mii maker, or by wirelessly importing them through the Mii Channel on a Wii console. Once a Mii's appearance has been set, the player can determine the details of their profile by entering their family name, given name, nickname, birthdate (which allows the game to celebrate the Mii's birthday once it arrives), favorite color (which also determines the color of certain items they use), and blood type. The player can also set a Mii's relationship to them, which will prevent them from having romantic interactions with the player's Mii. Next, the player is able to set the Mii's voice. Six preset settings are available, but the player can also manipulate several sliders to fine-tune aspects of the voice. Finally, the Mii's personality can be set through five trait scales; Action (slow to quick), Speech (mild to straight), Look (cool to emotive), Mindset (negative to positive), and Overall (weird to normal). Once the player is finished with the customization process, the Mii's specific personality is described on-screen, and the Mii moves into the first available apartment in Mii Apartments. After moving into an apartment, existing Miis can have any part of their profile altered, aside from their gender, by accessing it from a list in the city hall. Mii interactions Once a Mii has moved into their own apartment, the player can interact with them in several ways. The Mii will occasionally have various problems that the player can address, which include being hungry, wanting new clothes, wanting to make friends, having relationship struggles such as fights, being sick, or just wanting to ask the player a question. If a Mii is asleep, the player may have a chance to view a dream, leading to a bizarre mini-game, event, or activity. Tapping on the Mii's face while they are asleep will let the player doodle on their face, though it is not permanent. Miis may also want to play mini-games with the player, letting the player receive various treasures if they win. Upon solving a Mii's problem, the Mii will gain happiness and the player will receive money relative to the "severity" of the problem and how it was resolved. (For example, feeding a hungry Mii food that they love will grant more money and happiness than food that they merely "like".) In some cases, a Mii's happiness can go down from a problem resolved in a negative manner, though it will not decrease their level or the player's amount of money. When a Mii's happiness bar is filled, the Mii will level up, prompting the player to give them a reward. Rewards come in four types: songs, usable gifts, special interiors, and a catchphrase. (A catchphrase can only be given once.) Songs come in different genres, and let the player edit the lyrics before the Mii performs them in their apartment, while gifts are items that Miis can use or play with in their apartment autonomously. As there are a limited number of level-up rewards, a Mii that levels up enough will eventually be given all of them, though they can still gain levels as normal.
