The objective is to guide Mario or Luigi through side-scrolling levels to rescue Princess Toadstool. You run and jump to avoid enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas, and can defeat them by jumping on their heads or using power-ups. The Super Mushroom makes you grow larger, the Fire Flower lets you throw fireballs, and a new Super Leaf power-up allows you to fly temporarily. Each level is filled with platforms, pits, and pipes to navigate. The game is known for its high difficulty, with hidden blocks, tricky jumps, and poison mushrooms that shrink you.
